Colonial Pipeline

Impact: Had to shut down OT to additionally halt breach and protect their control systems.

Infiltration: Password compromise by Russian ransomware gang DarkSide.

Remediation: Paid ransom in order to decrypt their data.

Repercussions: $4.4 million ransom. Public panic at the pumps. Associated business losses.

 JBS

Impact: Interrupted (global) Supply chain and Operations.

Infiltration: Brute-force RDP, by Russian ransomware gang REvil.  

Remediation: Paid ransom to keep its files safe.

Repercussions: $11 million ransom. Supply and operations interrupted. Public unrest. Associated business losses.

FireEye CEO Kevin Mandia says (paraphrased) “…We must play offense to combat this – using economic sanctions, technical solutions, and diplomacy….We have to pull at every lever on this one….We went public with the SolarWinds breach last December because we had an obligation to do so…. It will take community defense on a global level to bring businesses’ current ransomware nightmare to an end.”
