Cybercriminals 2022 … Endangered Species?

Tumultuous world events and ‘new normal’ covid adjustments during the first third of 2022 brought major changes to our workplaces and personal lives. People across the globe are evaluating their personal and professional well-being and are trying to make decisions in a world where the future is more and more unpredictable.

We’re becoming a population that is unwilling to be robbed of justice by bandits, whether above ground (i.e. politicians, supposedly good causes, and products/services that warrant serious discernment before engaging); or the underground (cybercriminals and other financially-devastating schemes). The vigilance we see in our local communities and among global citizens is reflected in everything from countries’ peoples making room for refugees brutally displaced in economy-crippling numbers; to employees making life- changing decisions for themselves and families with rewarding moves they might never have formerly dared; to law enforcement, legislation, and private sectors’ unparalleled collaboration to phase out and eventually cease and desist cybercrime. This last tenacious move to ‘extinct’ cybercriminals is a must before they hit us like a freight train.

What are Cybercriminals going after?  Critical Infrastructure and Services

Attacks on remote workers and an uptick in cyber threats has prompted legislation that requires U.S. companies to report all cyberattacks so that law enforcement may gain insights to attackers inner-workings and trends. Europol and other nations’ security endeavors have been heightened as intelligence and enforcement agencies work together to protect our essential infrastructures.

U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Rob Portman (R-OH) co-partnered the legislation passed by Senate on March 1, known as the Strengthening American Cybersecurity Act of 2022.  Peters said, “Cyber-attacks against federal networks and critical infrastructure companies – including oil pipelines, meatpacking centers, and wastewater treatment plants – have disrupted lives and livelihoods across the country. That is why, for months, I have been leading efforts to fight back against cybercriminals and foreign adversaries who launch these incessant attacks.”

Private sector cybersecurity initiatives are increasing and effective

Early this year, CISA warned organizations of all sizes to “be prepared to respond to disruptive cyber activity”. CISA has encouraged the private sector to modernize cyber defenses in preparation for larger threats of ransomware and cyberattacks. (See the CISA website for recommendations and summary of risks.) Many companies have been improving their cyber infrastructure and engaging cybersecurity professionals.

There is only ONE way to stop cybercriminals: Outsmart their use of technology

Cyber-attacks can only be defeated by outsmarting attempts to misappropriate legitimate software and services with malware designed to seize personal information, trade secrets, data, and financial assets. Undetected attacks can turn simple lap-/desktops or servers into destructive devices.

Outsmarting cyber-attacks requires

1. Cyber awareness and refusal to engage: Users of targeted computers and devices are trained to recognize and handle common inside-out attacks.

2. Around-the-clock monitoring: Qualified cyber career specialists familiar with techniques used to infiltrate and infest networks are focused on outside-in threat detection and response.

Businesses do right by their employees, their customers, their vendors, and shareholders to couple IT staff  with cyber specialist partners who are equipped to hunt, identify, and mitigate threats and breach. Together, we’ll shatter hopes and work to extinct cybercrime’s pack of wolves wanting a payday at the cost of your legacy!
